Tameside Cultural Services

Tameside Council Cultural Services are a local authority in Greater Manchester. They have been offering Arts Award across the Tameside borough for under two years and have so far supported 9,000 children and young people to achieve awards. Arts Award is offered to community groups, primary schools and secondary schools, as well as independent organisations working with young people.

Tameside offer Arts Award to a range of young people, so they have developed bespoke Arts Award logs to support the specific needs of the organisations and young people that they work with. This includes a bespoke War Horse Bronze log.

The Core

The Core is the main arts venue in Corby, Northamptonshire. The venue offers a number of activities from weekly drama sessions to one off digital projects,dance residencies to musical taster workshops. The Core also offers Arts Award at all levels and across multiple arts forms with young people aged 5-25 years old. They have been delivering Arts Award for two years. 91 young people have achieved awards to date.

The Customs House

The Customs House Since 2009, Customs House has supported over 200 young people to achieve Arts Awards at Discover to Gold levels.

the egg theatre

the egg, Theatre Royal Bath is a children and young people's theatre in Bath. They have been delivering Arts Award for over three years and offer it at all levels and in multiple art forms. Arts Award is used as a structure for a number of creative projects with schools and young people.

They ran Gold Arts Award with Unit 2 (leadership of an arts project) as the structure over six months, with events to work towards as a collective. They weaved Unit 1 (personal arts development) through this structure with one to one progress reports and online liaison.

The Hertfordshire & Essex High School

The Hertfordshire & Essex High School are a Good Practice Centre for 2017-18. 

One part of their large Arts Award programme takes place in the school library, with Librarian Chloe Dash acting as Arts Award adviser for a group of young people who wish to combine their CILIP Carnegie Medal Shadowing programme with their Arts Award. 

The Lowry Arts Centre

Established in 2000 and based at Salford Quays, The Lowry is a cross-arts venue that aims to enrich people’s lives and to contribute to the creative wellbeing of the North West. 

The Lowry delivers all levels of Arts Award to a wide variety of young people. They worked in partnership with Tameside Council Cultural Services and The National Theatre (NT) to produce a bespoke Explore log for War Horse (see Tameside Council Cultural Services’ case study for further details). They also offer Bronze, Silver and Gold Arts Award to young people engaged in their learning & engagement programmes and seek to embed Arts Award across their programmes and outreach work.

The Nerve Centre

The Nerve Centre is a creative media arts centre based in Derry, Northern
Ireland where young people can get involved with a range of different art
forms including music, film, digital arts, design and production.
The centre delivered the Bronze Arts Award to 19 young people as part of a regional BFI Film Academy programme.

The New School at West Heath

The New School at West Heath is a Specialist Independent School catering for students aged 11-19 with a diverse range of needs. Discover, Explore and Bronze and Silver are delivered to students through the curriculum with Gold offered an extra-curricular activity for students interested in purusing a career in the arts.

The Story Museum

The Story Museum, based in Oxford, celebrates story in all forms and explores their enduring power to teach and delight. For their Discover Arts Award, young people visited The Story Museum and identified the art forms displayed. They researched artists and arts practitioners in an area that inspired them and they wanted to find out more about. They took part in workshops in a variety of arts including drama and storytelling and created their own stories. Finally, they reflected on the project, what they had discovered, what they had enjoyed and what they are now inspired to do.


The Valley School

Students at The Valley School are aged between 11-16 years old and all have statements of special educational needs, with a range of moderate learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders and speech, language and communication needs. Literacy and communication are areas that many students at The Valley School find challenging, so Arts Award is used as a way of recognising students’ abilities in the
arts.

Bronze Arts Award is offered to all Year 9 students, with Silver Arts Award as an option in Years 10 and 11. The school plans to expand this to offer Arts Award Discover and Explore as well as Gold Arts Award in the future.

Towner Gallery

Towner is an award-winning contemporary art gallery & museum in
Eastbourne. They present major art exhibitions and displays from a
collection of over 4000 art works spanning contemporary and more classical
pieces.


Arts Award is embedded into several of their programmes such as Pathways,
a programme offering vocational training to young people aged 14 to16 at
risk of exclusion from mainstream education.

Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums

Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums working in partnership with Circus Central and Juice festival found inspiration in the archives and museum collections for an HLF funded project that led to six young people achieving their Silver Arts Award.
