In 2015, two young people from Barton Moss secure care centre achieved their Gold Arts Awards, the first in secure settings to do so. They took part in a photography project exploring the issue of identity. For at least one of the Gold candidates, this project has led to a very promising resettlement outside of prison and back into mainstream society.

Oxford University Museums and Collections and The Highfield

(Last edited: Friday, 16 October 2015, 10:28 AM)

Oxford University Museum of Natural History and Oxfordshire Hospital School, The Highfield (an acute mental health ward for teenagers) ran ‘Project Dinosaur’ with a group of 15 young people. 12 young people achieved their Arts Award Discover and three achieved their Bronze Arts Award.
The outreach education officers, with teachers based at the Highfield Unit, planned, advised and guided the young people, who are often too ill to keep up with their studies, through the project and award. Arts Award enabled the museum to connect with people who wouldn’t otherwise access its collections and enabled the school to build on the young people’s skills and gain an accreditation during their stay in hospital.
